Changing your Sympatico settings [Your Account]
Basic Info  |  ROAMING  | Dialup Settings  |  E-mail & News Settings  |  Dialup Numbers  |  Sympatico service settings table

Automatic setup for roaming

In order to use your Sympatico account while travelling in Canada, you need to change the dialup number your computer uses to connect to the Internet, the e-mail and news settings for sending e-mail and reading newsgroups, and the DNS (Domain Name System) settings, as well as modify your Sympatico login User ID. In total, based on the phone number you use to dialup from, the Sympatico roaming software will automatically configure these settings to work properly in your remote location:

  • Dialup number - the number your modem dials to connect to the Internet
  • Outgoing e-mail server address - the SMTP server; (your incoming mail server - the POP server - remains the same)
  • Newsgroup server - the NNTP server used to view Usenet newsgroups (Note: Changing your news server will affect your newsrc file, which records which messages you've read, etc. We suggest you use a Web-based news reader, like DejaNews.)
  • DNS server addresses - ensures efficient Internet browsing
  • Your Sympatico User ID - appends your User ID with the domain name of your host Sympatico service provider

Download the Sympatico roaming software

Before you can change your settings automatically, you must download and install the free Sympatico roaming software on your computer. If you are travelling with a portable computer, you should do this before you leave. The Sympatico roaming software will only work properly with Sympatico editions of Netscape Communicator 4.04 and newer. If you're using an earlier version of Netscape software, or using Internet Explorer, you'll have to configure your settings manually.

Updating your roaming software

After you install the roaming software, make sure that you have the latest version of the roaming data file before you travel.

Use Sympatico Account Setup to configure your settings for roaming or for restoring your original settings

Once you have downloaded the roaming software to your computer and installed it, you use the Account Setup software (which came with your Sympatico software) to automatically configure a new connection (with all the necessary changes in settings) based on your current location in Canada. All you need to know is the phone number of the phone line you're using to connect to the Internet (the number someone would dial to call you on that line).

The Sympatico roaming software modifies the Sympatico Account Setup software so it can set up your Sympatico settings for roaming. The Sympatico Account Setup software was installed in your Sympatico directory or folder when you originally installed your Sympatico software.

When you return home and are no longer roaming, you can also use the same Sympatico Account Setup software to automatically restore your original settings (see below).

To start Sympatico Account Setup for Windows 95/98
  1. Click Windows 95 Start taskbar button, select Programs, select Sympatico, then click Sympatico Account Setup.

  2. For roaming, click the green arrow button next to Set up my account to connect from another location (roaming). (If this option is not available, you will have to complete the operation manually or download the roaming software.)

  3. To restore your original settings after roaming, click the green arrow button next to Restore original settings.

  4. Follow the instructions in the Account Setup windows.

To start Sympatico Account Setup for Macintosh
  1. Open your hard drive icon and locate the Sympatico folder, then double-click Account Setup.
