How do I know what my personal Sympatico user information is?

When you join the Sympatico service by installing your Sympatico software (or setting up existing Internet software with Sympatico settings), and then registering, you are given a unique User ID, email address and password, which are used every time you dial up to the Sympatico service. Your User ID is usually a mix of eight letters and numbers (something like b1wxyz99), except for members in Nova Scotia and Northeastern Ontario, where your User ID is your email prefix (the part that comes before @xx.sympatico.ca).

When you register, you can usually choose your email name, the part that precedes @xx.sympatico.ca. Your password is usually generated automatically for you (in some cases you can choose your own Password) and is used both for connecting to the Sympatico service, for retrieving your email, and for uploading to your personal Webspace. You are reminded to record all your Sympatico user information that came with your Sympatico starter kit in case you need it at a later date.

Your personal Sympatico user information

User info unique to your account:

  • email address (in the form of yourname@xx.sympatico.ca; your service provider may have more than email address or email alias).
  • User ID (used for dialup connection, email retrieval, and in some cases, uploading to your personal Webspace; User ID is the same as "User Name", as it's labeled in some Internet software).
  • Password (same password is used for dialup connection and email retrieval).
  • Sympatico Personal Identification Number (SPIN)/Account Number (usually required for when you call Sympatico Member Services).
  • Personal Webspace address (once activated, usually has the form of http://www3.xx.sympatico.ca/youremailprefix - check the Webspace help section for details).

Service provider info used with your account:

  • Local dialup number (for modem connection to the Sympatico service).
  • Outgoing (SMTP) and incoming (POP) mail server addresses.
  • Usenet news (NNTP) server address.
  • DNS (Domain Name System) and domain information depends on where you live and who your Sympatico service provider is.

See the Sympatico service provider setup information page for mail, news and DNS address details.

Where to find your personal Sympatico user information

If you've forgotten one or more parts of your unique Sympatico information, here's where you can find them in your Sympatico software:

  • email address. Your Sympatico email address can be found in your email software settings window. If entered correctly, it should appear in your mail message windows as you compose them. If entered incorrectly, you may not receive replies to emails you send. If you're unsure whether your email address is entered correctly, read these instructions on how to find out what your email address is.
  • User ID. This appears in your Sympatico dialer window, and in the email settings window of your email software.
  • Password. Your password appears in your Sympatico dialer window, but is disguised as a series of *** characters and so is undecipherable to anyone. If you have not written it down, your only recourse is to contact Sympatico Member Services for assistance.

  • Sympatico Personal Identification Number (SPIN)/Account Number. If used by your service provider, this number is used to identify you to Member Services by keying it using your telephone keypad when calling Member Services. If you have one, it was generated and displayed when you registered. You should have written it down in the back of your Getting Started with the Sympatico Service user guide.
