When you connect to Internet via the Sympatico service your modem dials a local "dialup" phone number to make the connection. This telephone number is a unique number; it varies depending where in Canada you connect to the Sympatico service. If your Sympa tico software was set up automatically when you first registered as a Sympatico member, then the local dialup number unique to your location was entered automatically into your dialer software (your dialer software is Windows Dial-Up Networking or Macintosh OT PPP. Connecting to the Sympatico service when travelling (roaming)The Sympatico service is offered in every province and territory in Canada, with over 350 dialup locations. Connecting to a Sympatico dialup location other than from your 'home' location is called 'roaming'. With some modifications to your dialup setti ngs, you can use your Sympatico software and account information to connect to the Internet at any Sympatico dialup location in Canada. Please see Roaming - connecting to the Sympatico service across Canada. Dialup access speeds All Sympatico local dialup numbers work at connections of at least 28.8 Kbps. While most Sympatico service providers support 33.6 Kbps and 56 Kbps, access at this speed may not be available in all dialup locations of your service provider's operating a rea. Click the province/service provider name in the table below for more details.
*Note that, although V.90 is supported in most dialup locations, the Sympatico service does not yet support the V.90 56 Kbps modem standard everywhere. However, if you already have a V.90 modem, you may still be able to connect but at a slower speed than you expect. What connect speeds can I expect? Use the table below to help you match the speed and standard your modem supports with that of your Sympatico service provider. The connect speeds indicated in red tell you what maximum speed you can expect (in Kbps), but under optimal telephone line conditions only. (Generally, a connection made with a 56 Kbps modem at between 40 - 50 Kbps is considered good.)
*Notes:
If you want to connect to the Sympatico service using another computer, such as a portable computer, we recommend that you install the Sympatico software on it. See What if I want to connect from a differe nt computer?
