My Sympatico: Frequently Asked Questions
No password is required to access your personalized page. My Sympatico uses what are called cookies to save your profile information. This allows your personalized page to be configured automatically upon visiting the site without you having to remember and use passwords. Cookies are small text files that are saved on your hard drive and are quite commonly used on the World Wide Web. Find out more about cookies. How do I make My Sympatico my default home page?You can make your My Sympatico personalized page the first page you see when you start your browser by changing the default home page setting in your browser. Where is the information of my personal profile stored?The personal information that you entered to configure your personalized home page is actually stored on your own computer's hard drive. This is done with a cookie, which is a small text file that your browser retrieves from your hard drive when you visit the site. This saves you the trouble of having to enter a user name and password every time you want to access My Sympatico. Why does My Sympatico use cookies?My Sympatico uses cookies because they are a convenient way to store your profile information. This saves you the trouble having to manually enter your user name and remember yet another password. All cookie information resides on your computer's hard drive. Any information collected through the use of cookies is kept strictly confidential. For more information about privacy, please review the My Sympatico privacy policy. Can I change the information in my personal profile?Changing the information your personal profile is easy. Simply go to your personalized My Sympatico home page and click the link to Edit My Profile found in the top, left-hand side of the page. This will take you a page where you can review and edit your current My Sympatico profile. Can I have more than one personal profile?If there is more than one person using your browser then you may want to set up more than one personal profile. This will allow each user to be greeted personally and receive their preferred content upon arrival at My Sympatico. This is done by adding users through Netscape's User Profile Manager. Each profile has its own set of cookies, therefore each profile user can create their own My Sympatico personalized home page. Unfortunately, Netscape Navigator 4 is currently the only browser that allows multiple profiles. If you use Netscape Communicator and you wish to create additional User Profiles follow these instructions.
Once you have completed your personalization selections on the My Sympatico form and clicked the Submit button at the bottom of that page, a cookie will be placed on your computer's hard drive. This cookie contains all the information necessary to assemble your customized Sympatico home page. Since you are in possession of your own personal information, opting out of the My Sympatico service simply means not visiting the My Sympatico site. The regular, un-personalized Sympatico home page is always available at www.sympatico.ca.
