How can I find things on the Internet? [ FAQ ]
HELP WITH FINDING THINGS ON THE INTERNET  |  Internet Directories  |  What are search engines?  |  Keyword search features  |  Censoring software

There are several ways to find things on the Internet.
Start with the Sympatico.ca Subject Index, which you can access from the Sympatico home page. Within each of the Sympatico categories, you will find links to hundreds of family-friendly Web sites that have been categorized and organized for you.

Sympatico Search

For everything you're looking for on the Internet including Sympatico.ca, the fastest search is Sympatico Search. Read more about using Sympatico Search.

Looking for Internet help?

If you're looking for help with using the Internet, try searching the Sympatico Help site. You can 'talk' online to others looking for Internet help - give and get help in the Sympatico Computer and Internet forum.

People

If you are looking for a person's e-mail address or phone number, you can search a White Pages Directory.

Directories

Another way you can find a Web site is by looking in Internet directories. These are like tables of contents in books, except that they include descriptions of selected Web sites and newsgroups, as well as links to them.

Make the most of search engines

If you are looking for something specific, you can use one of the many Internet search engines. These work like indexes in books, since they allow you to look for Web sites and newsgroups containing specific words.

Once you've found the Web page you want, you can use the Find button on your browser's toolbar (or in the Edit menu) to find specific words on it. This is handy if you've found a very long document that you don't want to read all the way through just to see if a word or name is there.

Children's safety

If you're worried about what you or your children might find in directories and search engines, you can restrict access to material you might find objectionable by using censoring software.
